Zimbabwe’s biggest opposition party MDC Alliance has received more than $123 000 of donations from party members and sympathizers in just 24hrs, details have shown.
The initiative was birthed on Sunday after it emerged that MDC-T led by Thokhozani Khupe received $7,5 million under the Political Parties (Finance) Act.
The law states that the party that would have deployed MPs in Parliament are entitled to the funding, and according to the 2018 election outcome only two parties are entitled to that funding, that is the MDC Alliance and Zanu-PF.
But surprisingly, Khupe’s MDC-T party which got only two seats in parliament received the funding.
The controversial allocation of the funding by the Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi did not deter the Chamisa led group but rather motivated them to find ways of financing the political movement.
“The MDC Alliance needs your HELP! We must keep our movement going! Every donation counts. Donate at http://mdcallianceparty.org. Our biggest asset is the people. If 5000 Zimbabweans all over the world donate $20, we will have $100,000! Let’s RETWEET & make it happen!” The party tweeted.
Launched just two days ago, the initiative has so far received more than $123 000 from donations.
On the launch date they had received $75 000 but 24 hours later $123 000 was already into their account.
“Thanks to all those who donated yesterday a total of ZWL$123 076 to replace the money which was stolen and given to @DrThoko_Khupe by Gvt. Please retweet so that our campaign can reach many Zimbabweans,” the party’s Secretary General Chalton Hwende posted on his Twitter account.
