The talks between the President Filipe Nyusi and President Emmerson Mnangagwa who has been on a state visit to Mozambique since Sunday resulted in the finalizing of the 3 year energy deal between the two countries.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Veronica Mocamo Ndlovu said Mozambique will be selling more energy to Zimbabwe, Electricity will be supplied under an agreement signed in 1997 between Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

“Due to the continuous demand of the agriculture sector and mining industry in Zimbabwe, we are looking to increase the quality of energy supplied ,” Minister Macamo said.

The deal of 50MW to 150MW will be supplied under an agreement signed in 1997 between Hidroele`ctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), State owned Electricidade de Mozambique (EDM) and the Zimbabwe Energy Supply Authority (ZESA).

The deal would minimize the power cuts experienced in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe have been experiencing serious power cuts since 2019 till date due to the lower levels of water at Kariba dam. At times ZESA would announce that they are having technical challenges at Hwange Power Station.

In January ZESA announced increase of load shedding because some units at the Kariba South power stations would be taken out of service to allow for the completion of critical works on the dam wall, the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation project.
