Mnangagwa Threatens Protesters With Jail

0

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has threatened Zimbabweans seeking to assert their rights to demonstrate against the government with jail, instead urging them to “look for money.”

In a short video clip circulating on social media, Mnangagwa in full Zanu PF party regalia apparently addressing a rally declared demonstrations are a waste of time.

“Don’t waste your time running around in the streets demonstrating. Look for money. Look for money because demonstrations will lead you to jail. They will bring teargas onto the streets,”

Mnangagwa declared.
Zimbabwe is notorious for strong arm tactics against citizens expression of dissent including reports of abductions, beatings as well as outright disappearances.

Since taking power in a bloodless coup in November 2017 that toppled longtime ruler Robert Mugabe, Mnangagwa has reacted with brutal force to any sign of dissent against his administration.

In 2018 hours after the announcement of presidential elections results that Mnangagwa narrowly won, security forces gunned down 6 civilians who had taken to the streets to demonstrate against allegations of electoral theft.

Six months later, in January 2019, some 19 people were reportedly killed after violent demonstrations erupted over a steep fuel price hike.
