ZEC Must Fix Voter’s Roll Mess: CCC

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has demanded that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission fixes the reported mess surrounding the voter’s roll, less than a week before hundreds of thousands of citizens go to a snap poll.

Zimbabwe will hold by – elections in four days time to fill gaps created by a number of opposition recalls and deaths of legislators as well as Councilors this Saturday.

A CCC electoral directorate official Councillor Ian Makone told journalists today, that his party also wanted to know which roll of voters the election management body would use for the coming by-elections as well as the contentious issues of vaccination of polling agents.

“We are very concerned that a few days before the by election there are still a lot of loose ends to this election so we brought to attention the various reports that we received from the field regarding the process of training polling electoral officials and the arrangements and the deployment of the officials.”

“Initially there are four issues that we drew to their attention and confirmed in writing the first issue is that we need to be assured as to which voter’s roll is going to be used on Saturday.

“If Zec confirms that it is not going to use that voters roll it means there is need to publish the one that is going to be used.

“Zec’s own road map in the count down promised to display the voter’s roll from the 24th to 26 of March of which they should have assured us that the voter’s roll is ready by now.

“We also hear that polling agents are not allowed into the stations unless they are vaccinated, instead Zec must have announced it earlier because now it’s too late and they must use the social distance method to contain the pandemic. It is unfair to say to our agents in this last hour that they are not admitted without Covid certification, “said Makone.

However in a short statement on its Twitter page ZEC refuted the allegations.

“The claims that polling agents are not allowed to carry torches, pens and cellphones into polling stations is a lie,” Zec said.

But Makone went on: “We are receiving reports from the field that agents are not allowed to take in a cell phones, pen and torch. It’s a case of Zec officials been reckless we need clarity on that since there is no law that say such things.

“We also wanted assurance that the process of consultation even at a local level. District Multi-Party Liaison Officer which enables us or our candidates to proof read the spaceman ballot papers which the never had the chance to do so and only to find out that a number of candidates could not recognize the picture that is on the ballot paper,” said Makone.
