Zimbabwe ‘s controversial opposition MDC T leader Douglas Mwonzora has defended the dismal turnout by his supporters on at his STAR star Rallies recently.
Recently the leading opposition party the Citizen Coalition for Change led by Nelson Chamisa has been seen drawing in thousands of cheering supporters in its star rallies amid Mwonzora’s failed rallies.
Mwonzora who has of late become a laughing stock by the public for hosting failed rallies refuted the claims of hosting poorly attended rallies in tweet video saying , he is not interested in the By election by rather his focus is on the general election next year.
“We are not merely moved by the numbers right now for these are just by- elections , we are looking forward to the general election next year . As MDC-T we are interested in people who are going to vote in the general election,”
Mwonzora’s party is contesting with the polls under the MDC-Alliance banner after controversially snatching the name from its former leader Nelson Chamisa who now leads the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
The majority of by-election were occasioned by the recall of some MPs and Councilors countrywide by Mwonzora on allegation of hobnobbing with his erstwhile colleague, Chamisa while a few others of the death of office holders.
At its peak, under Tsvangirai and later Chamisa,s leadership, the MDC attracted tens of thousands of supporters at its rallies , especially in Harare and other urban centers which have , since its formation in 1999, been its bastion of support.
