The Zimbabwe National Elders Forum (ZNEF) recently engaged with various teachers unions to hear their grievances after they wanted to boycott marking exams.
Unions including the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) and Amalgated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) converged in Harare as they stressed out some of their concerns to the elders.
Some of the unions allegedly wanted to boycott the marking because of regime change within the unions as they are now working with a British Minister.
The Executive Chairman for ZNEF Felix Mukunowengwe told this publication that after enquiring from the unions about the regime change, the unions refuted the allegations.
“They are also saying teachers salaries need to be reviewed upwards but we should have dialogue on such issues rather than what they are doing,” he said.
Some unionists are allegedly political actors hence they will be biased towards their agendas.
“When you are a unionist you are supposed to follow the contemporary government’s lead.
We would want them to meet with the president I think if they can air their grievances to their father it will be good,” he hinted.
The teachers have agreed to invigilate the same exams that they wanted to boycott, which started on November 22, starting with practicals.
The teacher unions also raised a red flag over allowances that are given to police officers who will be at the marking stations, with the teachers getting nothing.
