Zimbabwe warned of third wave ahead of winter season

0

Experts in the health sector have raised alarm over the observance of safety precautions against COVID in Southern Africa as the winter season approaches varied with low temperatures.

The alarm comes at a time when the country is slowly relaxing covid19 lockdown measures with the informal sector being reopened , businesses and schools have also resumed.

The acting Chief Executive Officer of Mpilo Central Hospital, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya raised the alarm on microblogging site Twitter ,” Coronavirus low temperatures have begun in Southern Africa, we should all be extremely careful this winter.”

“ Last winter we didn’t have the new variants. More lives could be lost in the coming waves due to complacency. New waves will be unforgiving, behaviour change is CRITICAL.”

He added that what happened is that the P1 variant is now endemic due to the “little flue” mentality .

“For our settling here winter will see people working in closed spaces , offices, buses , due to temperatures thereby re-breathing in each others noses.”

Studies have previously shown that common cold viruses spread more easily in cool weather and dry air, as is often the case in winter.

The coronavirus is very similar to cold viruses in size and shape. It seems likely then, that this virus will also spread more easily in autumn and winter.
