Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona told Parliamentarians recently that the government is mulling the introduction of a coupon system to ease congestion at tollgates countrywide.
Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) said it will soon introduce the coupon system aiming at decongesting tollgates countrywide.
The development comes after complains were raised by motorists due to long delays caused by the payment system which was affected by poor network especially on tollgates which are in remote areas.
Responding to concerns Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona told Parliamentarians that ZINARA has improved connectivity in terms of point of sale as many banks were engaged.
“(ZINARA) have introduced what they call the tap card which was giving problems, particularly three or four weeks ago, but they have promised that there is now improved connectivity in terms of the point of sale where they have engaged a number of banks to be part of that very important programme.”
Minister Mhona further said the payment system will start work by the end of this month.
“So, you will see that ZINARA will soon be introducing a system whereby motorists will be issued with a coupon that they will use daily.
“I want to assure members that we have been given a target of March 31 by which date ZINARA would have resolved the issue of queues.”
Sometime in February, 2021, MDC-Alliance had issued a statement urging ZINARA to introduce and popularize all modes of payment on tollgates as motorists were subjected to long hour delays on tollgates due to network challenges as well as change for those who use foreign currency.
