Media Institute of Zimbabwe (MISA) has commented extensively about the safety, security of journalists and media since the beginning of the lockdown in response to the Covid 19 pandemic.

While addressing journalist in Harare during a workshop MISA director Tabani Moyo said the operational environment and democratic space remained volatile, uncertain and unpredictable as violations of journalists and media workers continue to take place.

‘Since the lockdown in response to the COVID-19pandemic, MISA Zimbabwe recorded 40 violation of journalists and media workers. Cases of Chin’ono;Mduduzi; journalist covering the airforce plane crush;Toyi Toyi and the Media; police attacks; assailants and impala .This is against provisions of the constitution through section 61,” he said.

He further added that Inevitably, several journalists are caught in the crossfire of the government’s crackdowns against constitutionally guaranteed rights to media freedom, freedom of expression, assembly and association. In that regard, the operational environment and democratic space remained volatile, uncertain and unpredictable.

“The Broadcasting Service Act amendment bill is stuck in Parliament which outlaws’ donations for the establishment of community radio which reduces foreign investment to 20 to 25 % meaning community radios in remote areas will not make it to get a licence,”

Speaking at the same event Dumisani Muleya addressed various challenges that are being faced by investigative journalist in caring out their investigative stories.

The challenges facing investigative journalism vary by culture and are influenced by politics, financing, time constraints, the commitment of media owners and journalists, and legal restrictions imposed by governments.

Additionally, Muleya said when journalists are not granted the right to keep their sources secret, their informants might become more reluctant to supply them with important information, thereby hindering investigative reporters’ ability to serve the public.

“As a journalist, one should be equipped by adequate resources so that will be able to carry out the investigative story without hinderance,”
