0

The Zimbabwe Universities Union has warned of a strike citing poor salaries that have been eroded by the inflationary environment, demanding that their salaries be restored to 2018.

The strike comes against a back drop off of an increase in the cost of living.

University unions met to discuss the salary issue and came with a resolution that the situation has eroded their purchasing power.

In a letter addressed to Universities Councillors the unions addressed that their salaries have become so paltry such that they are failing to cater for basic commodities on daily basis.

“The State universities salaries have lost value and have been eroded whilst services, utilities and basic commodities are quoted in United State Dollars or foreign currency.”

“The employer has neglected the agreement to meet the regional parity level salaries for state universities,” reads the letter.

Meanwhile, electricity , school fees , basic food commodities have been increasing while salaries remain stagnant causing a disparity.

“The state universities put in demands that their purchasing power be restored. The purchasing power of State universities employees’ salaries be retained to the level of July 2018 salaries.”

“The employees demand that the employer makes urgent steps to attain the regional level salary scales as per the agreement of 2010.The employer must urgently redress the salary disparity created in October 2019 (NDI/01).”.

State Universities notice of a strike comes while there has been an impasse between government and teachers who have not been reporting for duty citing incapacitation.
