The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (ZHRNGO forum) has approached High Court for the second time filing against the Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) together with government to take measures on the critical water challenge at the Chikurubi Maximum Prison
In a statement, the Human Rights Forum said government has to take measures to address the inhuman and degrading conditions of detention prisoners are subjected to.
“The situation in the prisons is so disturbing that the Forum has approached the High Court for the second time to compel the ZPCS and government to take measures to address the inhuman and degrading conditions of detentions by which the prisoners are subjected to.”
The Forum further added that water crisis haa gone for the worse as prisoners could go for weeks without taking a bath.
“The water situation is so dire that inmates have had to forego bathing after spending several weeks without water.”
The shortage of water has however caused the outbreak of diarrhea which is another problem as medication is in short supply.
“As a result of this water shortage there is now an outbreak of diarrhea and there is no medication.”
Apart from diarrhea, it is reported that tuberculosis and hepatitis B also broke out at the Chikurubi Maximum Prison which the ZPCS and government are suppose to look into before lives are claimed..
