ZRP authorizes mass gathering at Ginimbi’s funeral as by-elections remain suspended

In an act of violating current COVID-19 regulations, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has controversially authorized a request to conduct a mass farewell party for the late Genius ‘Ginimbi’ Kadungure at his mansion in Domboshava.

The funeral vigil will commence Thursday at 1800hrs hrs till late.

The permission to conduct this mass farewell party was granted at Marondera Police Provincial Headquarters on the 10th of October.

In response to the request for a farewell party, the ZRP has urged members of the public who are attending the party to maintain peace and order as well as avoiding the violation of the corpse throughout the event.

” Your request to conduct a farewell party for the late Genius Ginimbi Kadungure at Ginimbi’s mansion in Domboshava on the 12th of November 2020 from 1800hrs till late has been received.

Permission to conduct the party has been granted at the Marondera Police Provincial Headquarters in Marondera on the 10th of November 2020.”

“Avoid violation of the corpse. Maintain peace and order throughout the event,” the approval statement reads.

Kadungure and three other people in his car died after one of his posh cars (Rolls Royce Wraith) veered off the road, crashed into nearby trees and burst into flames killing three of the businessman’s associates who failed to extricate themselves from the wreckage.

Powered by the clearance letter, the area legislator for Goromonzi West Constituency Energy Mutodi has urged people from all walks of life to come in their large numbers for Ginimbi’s huge send-off which apparently is in violation with the government’s COVID-19 measures.

The approval comes at a time the government shelved all by-elections citing COVID-19 regulations reasons.

Chiwenga early last month amended Covid-19 regulations to stop the holding of parliamentary and municipal by-elections initially set for December 5.

The Public Health (Covid-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) Regulations 2020 was amended to say that “the holding of any by-election to fill a casual vacancy in parliament or in a local authority is, for the duration of the period of declaration of Covid-19 as a formidable epidemic disease, suspended…”

Before Chiwenga’s announcement ban through a statutory instrument, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) had initially announced that by-elections to fill the recalled parliamentarians and councilors seats will be held on December 5.

The ban was regarded by various critics as a gesture to stifle democratic space.
