As the situation in Zimbabwe continues to attract the attention of regional, continental and international communities, today in Harare, the Zimbabwe National Students Union president Takudzwa Ngadziore and members of the fourth estate were attacked by alleged members of the security forces dressed in plain clothes.

The incident saw journalists covering ZINASU press briefing event sustaining injuries and losing media equipment worthy thousands of dollars.

The attack was in full view of the police.

Ngadziore was attacked while addressing journalists in Hillside, Harare close to Impala Car Rental Offices.

The vehicle rental company has been accused of being part of the current widespread abductions and tortures after one of their off-road vehicles was used to abduct a university student, Tawanda Muchehiwa.

Addressing the media before the attack Ngadziore said, “We know Impala car rental released a vehicle that abducted one of own Tawanda Muchehiwa… we are never going to be silent; we are going to speak through to the injustice.”

An unidentified man disrupted the proceedings before attacking attendants and seizing media equipment.

According to reports, Ngadziore was bundled in a Toyota Noah driven to Harare Centra Police.

The student representative was recently released from prison after taking part in a flash protest at Impala Car Rentals offices in Harare demanding answers to the role the company played in the abduction of Tawanda Muchehiwa.

Muchehiwa was abducted and subsequently tortured by suspected state agents in Bulawayo on July 30, a day ahead of the much-anticipated #July30 anti-corruption protests.

He was found dumped three days later with severe injuries.

In a statement the Crisis of Coalition in Zimbabwe has condemned the brutal attacks and called for government to uphold human rights.

“Today the law enforcement agents have harassed Journalists who were covering Ngadziore’s press conference.”

“The CiZC is appalled by the continued crackdown on dissent by the Zimbabwean government, we implore the government to uphold citizens fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution including the right to life , the right to protest peacefully as well as freedom of assembly and association.”
