Incarcerated Investigative Journalist Hopewell Chi’nono is suspected to have contracted Covid-19 whilst at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.

This was revealed by one of his Lawyers Douglas Coltart on Monday who visited him in jail alleging that Chi’nono is exhibiting symptoms relating to Covid-19.

Earlier on Monday he was reported to be sick after MDC Alliance Vice Chair Job Sikhala pleaded that he is unwell and needs medical attention.

Coltart announced the development in a Twitter post saying that his symptoms are obviously of concern ,while he continues to be detained in an overcrowded cell at the prison.

Coltart said, “ The journalist is unwell and his symptoms include a fever, headache & distorted taste the symptoms are consistent with COVID-19 … but of course are not conclusive at this stage. We are still awaiting test result.”

However, Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has dismissed the reports stating that they are Social Media reports and Hopewell is well and being treated like any other prisoner.

ZPCS spokesperson Superintendent Meya Khanyezi said,“As far as we are concerned, he is well, but to our surprise, social media is awash with unconfirmed reports that he is not well. However, as the ZPCS we have allowed his personal doctor to go and see him,” she said.

Chi’nono has been detained for almost 6 weeks since his arrest on July 20 on allegations of inciting public violence.

He has being denied bail three time , while his case has become a prominent one gaining international traction.
