Latvian National Sentenced to 15 Years in Zimbabwe for Drug Trafficking

A 27-year-old Latvian national, Vitalis Kudrjasovs, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Harare Magistrate for attempting to smuggle 8.35 kilograms of heroin through Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

 

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Kudrjasovs was arrested on September 22, 2022, after airport security personnel flagged his luggage at the ground scanner due to suspicious contents.

“His luggage was flagged at the ground scanner after Airport Aviation Security personal manning the scanner noted some suspicious contents in his luggage.

 

“His two bags were subsequently searched in his presence and four packets containing heroine were found stashed in some compartments in the bags. The offender will save 15 years in prison.” Reads the statement.

 

Kudrjasovs was also fined US$5,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 5 years of imprisonment.
