In a dramatic turn of events, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has expelled its self-styled interim secretary-general and senator, Sengezo Tshabangu, citing gross misconduct. His expulsion sets the stage for a possible recall from the Senate as the party seeks to reinforce discipline within its ranks.
Tshabangu appeared before CCC’s National Disciplinary Committee on February 12, 2025, where he faced four counts of misconduct stemming from his actions between November and December 2024. According to a statement released by CCC spokesperson Willias Madzimure on Wednesday, February 19, Tshabangu was accused of making unilateral decisions that altered the party’s Parliamentary Portfolio without the approval of the party president or any other authorized organ.
The embattled politician was also charged with making derogatory public statements against acting president Welshman Ncube after he had already been suspended. Madzimure emphasized that Tshabangu’s actions were in violation of Clause 9.1.2.3 of the CCC Constitution, which governs internal conduct and party regulations.
“Tshabangu’s actions not only undermined the leadership of acting president Ncube but also displayed a brazen defiance of the National Standing Committee, National Executive Committee, and National Council,” said Madzimure. He further stressed that such behavior had caused significant reputational damage to the party at a crucial time when CCC is striving to maintain its political relevance.
During the disciplinary hearing, Tshabangu was represented by party legislator and lawyer Kucaca Phulu. Despite his defense, he was found guilty on all four charges leveled against him, leading to his immediate expulsion from the party.
Tshabangu’s expulsion is the latest development in the ongoing turmoil within the CCC, a party that has faced internal fractures since the disputed 2023 elections. His self-proclaimed leadership and controversial decisions have drawn criticism from within and outside the party, raising questions about the stability of Zimbabwe’s main opposition movement.
With his expulsion now official, the focus shifts to the next steps—whether the party will follow through with a formal recall from the Senate and how Tshabangu himself will respond to this political setback. Given his history of defiance, political analysts expect that he may challenge the decision in court or attempt to rally his supporters for an alternative political move.
As the CCC navigates this crisis, political observers argue that the party must urgently address internal conflicts and re-establish a unified front if it hopes to present a credible challenge to ZANU-PF in the future. Tshabangu’s expulsion, while a decisive move by CCC leadership, may not be the end of the internal strife plaguing the opposition party.
