Lands,Agriculture,Fisheries, water and Rural development minister Anxious Masuka says the current grain stock at the Grain Marketing Board is enough to meet the needs of rural communities until the next harvest expected in April 2025.

Giving a report in the recently just ended cabinet meeting the minister said Zimbabwe’s private sector has imported a significant amount of grain, totaling 1,349,877 metric tonnes, from April 2024 to February 2, 2025.

This includes 1,127,411 metric tonnes of maize, 220,092 metric tonnes of wheat, and 374 metric tonnes of wheat flour.

Additionally, the government has issued 1,021 maize import permits, allowing for the importation of 5 million metric tonnes of maize.

The government continues to monitor imports, stock levels, prices, and sources to prevent unfair trade practices.

“It’s worth noting that despite these imports, Zimbabwe’s grain reserves are expected to last until the next harvest in April,”said Masuka

The 2024/2025 Summer Season Plan aims to increase production of
cereals to 3.2 million metric tonnes, from the 744 000 metric tonnes
produced during the 2023/2024 summer season.
