Zim Plunges Into Darkness; Power Deficit Of 600MW

0

Largest coal power plant Hwange Power Station which draws raw water for electricity generation is currently incapacitated to generate sufficient power to match the demand.

“Currently the country is realizing an average of 1300MW from local generation against an average peak demand of 1900MW. This gives a deficit of at most 600MW that is met through imports from our neighbors”, Minister of Energy and Power Development Edgar Moyo.

He was speaking during the official handover of the Deka Upgradation project in Hwange, a project that is directly linked towards enhancing the electricity generating infrastructure in Zimbabwe.

”Government has put in place policies and plans to avert this situation. The National Energy Policy that was formulated in 2012 gives the general direction for energy development in the country. In addition, government has put in place the National Development Strategy, a policy framework that is geared towards realizing the ideals of Vision”,Moyo said.

He added that the demand for power is a moving target that rises by the day. Projections are that by end of 2030 the national demand for power will have increased to about 5000MW hence there is need for continual development in the sector. To that end government is working on a national power supply strategy that will prioritize projects on the basis of demand, applicable technology, economic viability, environmental and social effects.
