Pardon Nyamhondera, a bright 13-year-old, was walking home from Siyalima Primary School when the sky unleashed its fury. Seeking refuge from the downpour, he entered a tobacco barn, unaware of the danger lurking above. Moments later, a bolt of lightning pierced the structure, striking Pardon down in an instant. Despite desperate attempts to revive him, the young boy succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family and classmates heartbroken.
Just one day later, tragedy struck again in Dotito. Penias Kausiwo, a dedicated family man, was working in his tobacco field when the storm arrived. Sending his family to safety, he continued his work but was soon caught in the heavy rain. Seeking shelter with a friend, both men were struck by a deadly bolt of lightning. While Kausiwo’s friend survived, he was left to witness the heartbreaking scene of his friend lifeless on the ground, surrounded by burns from the powerful strike.
In the wake of these devastating incidents, police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe issued a strong warning to residents to Stay indoors when it rains and leave the fields and open spaces.
