Two police officers based in Beitbridge where jailed two years each following allegations of conniving to take a bribe from a suspect who was arrested for illegal possession of drugs at the Lutumba growth point.
Andrew Masakadza (37) and Fungai Gomo (33) both deployed at ZRP rural took 1200rands from Youbeen Mudimba in October last year.
The duo that denied charges of Criminal abuse of office as law enforcers, were convicted by Magistrate Takudzwa Gazemba based on the state’s evidence. They were left with 1 and half years of imprisonment after 6 months were suspended.
According to the states findings, on the 23rd of October last year at around 9pm at happy kitchen Lutumba business center, the duo received intel to the effect that Mudimba was selling drugs at her place of residence in Lutumba village, which is where they also reside.
The two proceeded to Mudimba’s house known as Happys Kitchen where upon arrival they searched the shop, handcuffed Mudimba and another resident Simbarashe Ndou and ordered them to enter the house.
They recovered 30 by 100mls of broncleer cough syrup, 250 twists of dagga and $100usd and R8000.
They arrested the complainant and asked for a R2000 bride to secure her release. Mudimba failed to get the money and claimed that she was only left with R500.
On their way to the station, Mudimba advised the two that the shop was once owned by Kudakwashe Chauke who they called and he offered them 1200rands.
After giving them the money, Chauke reported the case to ZRP Beitbridge Rural Police leading to the arrest of the duo.
