Harare High Court Judge Webster Chinamora has resigned rather than face a tribunal inquiry into his fitness to remain in office.
His resignations come barely 24 hours after President Emmerson Mnangagwa made a proclamation and set up a Tribunal to look into Justice Chinamora’s alleged corruption case.
On Friday, The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) secretary Walter Chikwana confirmed the latest development.
“I can confirm that Justice Chinamora has resigned from the bench.”
JSC recommended the inquiry to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in March this year following corruption allegations against the judge, but he took no action until this week following threats of legal action by lawyers.
Mnangagwa appointed retired Judge Moses Chinhengo to chair the tribunal. Other members of the Tribunal are Dr Gift Manayatera and Ms Clara Phiri.
