In a movie-style jail escape, a 36-year-old man facing robbery charges escaped from the holding cells at Chitungwiza Magistrates Court last Saturday with outside help, this publication has established.
Peter Huche who resides in Southlea Park, Harare, was due to appear before a magistrate after he was arrested by CID Chivhu for robbery. Details of the robbery have not been disclosed.
Huche was kept in the holding cells at the court as police officers escorting him went to meet prosecutors. Police believe he was sprung free by someone who used bolt cutters to cut through the rolled steel bars.
Huche quickly made good his escape as a search of the building failed to locate him.
The suspect was still on the run-on Monday.
Contacted for comment on the matter, an official from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) said the suspect was still in the hands of the police when he escaped, hence the police were the best to comment on the matter.
JSC Secretary Walter Chikwana added his voice and said the matter was under investigation.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPSC) spokesperson Meya Kanyeze was not readily available for comment.
