The government has assured the nation that the grain available in stock will last until the next harvesting season.

Speaking in Harare during the latest cabinet briefing, Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fishery, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Masuka informed the nation that maize grain and traditional grain stocks available at Grain Marketing Board (GMB) are enough to take the nation to another harvesting season.

The sentiments come at a time when the nation is preparing for the 2023/2024 summer cropping season.
The meeting agreed that the country was targeting to produce large amounts of maize grain, soya beans, sunflower, sorghum, pearl millet and cotton in the upcoming farming season.

“Food production will be under various funding programmes including Pfumvudza/ Intwasa. The government has also facilitated bank financing, private sector and self-financing to cater for this summer cropping season,” said Masuka.

Much success is expected in the upcoming farming season as the government and Seeds Associations have released seed crop and variety suitability information to assist all stakeholders in the selection of appropriate varieties for their agroecological zones.

As the cabinet briefing continued, it was highlighted that there are going to be established farmer field schools to enhance farmer training.
The country expects to surpass the previous year’s outputs by accelerating plot preparations with enough tractors for tillage. More hectares have been committed to for maize production with irrigation as dam levels are still at an average capacity.
