Masara Pushes For Gender Equality Representation In Parliament

Matabeleland North Legislator Sibusisiwe B Masara who is also the Deputy Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Women Parliamentary Caucus has urged for gender equality representation in Parliament.

In an interview, Masara highlighted that there is lack of political will to implement gender equality in spite of the fact that the Constitution of Zimbabwe advocates for gender equality in all spheres of the Zimbabwean society.

“As women we fail to push for gender equality representation because we are the minority in Parliament.

“We have got measures that are already there that pushes for 50/50 representation of men and women in Parliament, the policies are very clear but there is lack of political will to implement what is in our Constitution.

“If we fail to implement what is in our Constitution what do we expect women to do. We fail to implement the 50/50 policy and we say we are a democratic country,” she said.

She further highlighted that Senate has more women as compared to men due to the Zebra System that is used.

Masara went on to urge women to support each other.

“The main reason why we are still struggling as women is because we do not hold positions of authority in our own political parties and also women are more than half of the population of the country but we do not support each other, instead of supporting fellow women, women support men.”

She added that Political parties must ensure that women contest each other inorder to return women into Parliament, so that the number of women in Parliament remains at par.
