The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with French independent power producer Hydrogène de France (HDF Energy) to develop the first green hydrogen power plant in the country.

The signing of the US$300m MOU will allow Zimbabwe to build its first utility-scale green hydrogen power plant, known as Middle Sabi Renewable, in Chipinge.

Part of the benefits the country will have from this partnership include the generation of stable and dispatchable renewable energy which will increase access to electricity for the local population.

According to Energy and Power Development Permanent Secretary Dr Gloria Magombo the MOU will also allow the development of over 1000 MW by independent power producers to meet the country’s current demand.

“This MoU provisions for development of over 1000MW of solar projects being developed by independent power producers to help narrow sever energy deficits currently being experienced in the country,”

“The plant will produce green power 24/7 feeding into the grid through the Middle Sabi Substation located 4 km from the project site. The annual electric production will be 178 GWh, providing electricity to more than 220,000 inhabitants,” she said.

This plant is expected to meet the energy deficit that the country is currently struggling with.
