ZEC Commissioner Must Never Contest in Elections: Mliswa

0

Independent Norton Legislator Temba Mliswa has said Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Commissioners must not contest in elections as it discredits the impartiality of ZEC.

This came in after, former ZEC Commissioner Qhubani Moyo is contesting the Insiza Constituency on a Zanu PF ticket in the upcoming primary elections.

The former ZEC Commissioner, once contested the Insiza Constituency twice, in 2008 and 2013 on a MDC ticket before his appointment as ZEC Commissioner.

“This is very wrong and doesn’t offer good optics for the electoral system. It should be made law that once you are a ZEC commissioner then you can never contest in elections. It damages the standing of ZEC as we begin to doubt the impartiality of all those who are still there.”

He further said the 7 Commissioners are political activists and are not fit for purpose.

“It clearly shows that some of these guys are only there furthering their political ambitions. You can see it with those 7 rogue Commissioners. They are political activists and should by now have stepped down or been removed. They are not fit for purpose.

Moyo was appointed as ZEC Commissioner in 2015 and his office term expired in 2021.
