Chinese equipment vendor ZTE and China Mobile won the “Best Mobile Innovation for Connected Economy” award at the Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO) at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

ZTE and China Mobile Guangzhou Branch won the award for their “5G-empowered Smart Metro in Guangzhou”, the accolade given for recognition in enhancing productivity and contributing to industry and society.

They beat rivals Cumucore, Hong Kong Telecom, Veon, China Mobile and Huawei to the award.

The smart metro project was launched in 2020 tapping into 5G technologies such as network slicing and private networks, enabling 750Mb/s uplink rate enhancement, and mobile connections even when travelling at 160 km/h high-speed.

A multi-layer cloud-edge collaboration system was also deployed to provide to implement in-depth interaction and sharing of online data among people, vehicles, operating environments and devices. This also provided greater communication between 5G smart stations, 5G train-to-ground communication, and 5G digital tunnels.

Since launching the project two years ago the Guangzhou Metro has witnessed improved automated operations and maintenance, more efficient dispatching and management, and higher passenger satisfaction. The metro system serves around 20 million people in the city and was provided with average data rates of 600MBps on metro carriages, faster luggage inspection, shorter turnstile access during rush hour and detailed guidance.

“We are honoured to win this award together with our partners. 5G smart subways enhance the intelligence and flexibility of stations, train safety, and subway operation efficiency,” said Guangzhou Metro Group deputy general manager Cai Changjun.

“Moving forward, we will verify more 5G+ smart subway services, form the 5G+ smart metro system architecture and industry standards, and promote the rapid growth of 5G+ in the metro industry.”

China Mobile Guangzhou Branch general manager Luo Weimin added, “We’re honoured to receive this award and attribute it to our partners, who have shown us valuable support. We are committed to building leading 5G networks in terms of quality, technology, service, and operation. We will continue our efforts in building a new 5G industry ecosystem in conjunction with partners by using leading 5G networks.”
