The current anti-drug proliferation campaign by the police is a welcome development but government needs to deal with the root cause of drug abuse, Independent Norton lawmaker Temba Mliswa has said.

Mliswa took a tweet to highlight the root cause of rampant drug abuse in the country.

“I’m grateful for the current operation by Gvt but I remain concerned about the macro situation which has created this problem. Drug abuse is a symptom of bigger issues. We should not be lulled into a false sense of security that such operations will effectively curtail the issue.

“Many issues such as the poor remuneration of civil servants, bad governance and the struggling economy have given ground to the sprouting of these problems. Resultantly, the system has become a corroded web of selfish units each out for its own end.

“Now we have police officers such as Muvhevhi killing people, armed robberies by security personnel and we have naked cases of corruption such as Wadyajena’s being struck off the roll on frivolous grounds. It’s a system that is grinding down, weighed down by multiple vices.

He further said government must consider dealing with the underlying issues which have created the problems.

“All these are symptoms of structural problems in the country. We have to deal with the underlying issues which have created the symptoms we are experiencing. Unfortunately we act ignorant of the real issues and that is the new patriotism!

“Even though you are a Gvt worker you need talk about these issues @nickmangwana. A parastatal is defrauded US$5 million, no one is accountable and we are all quiet. It’s a strange kind of patriotism. Next day e lament about sanctions,” he said.
