Opposition parties in Zimbabwe are now pinning hopes on Zambia assuming chairmanship of the SADC tropika in a bid to ensure that the country has the necessary political reforms before 2023 elections are held.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema is set to assume chairmanship of the troika is mandated to steer and provide Member States with direction regarding matters that threaten peace, security and stability in the Region.
Zimbabwe is set to have general elections ilater this year,but the oppositon has continued to press the government to implement the necessary reforms needed to have a credible election and the move has reignited hope that ZImbabwe might be pressured to implement the reforms.
Zimbabwe has endured political violence in recent weeks with opposition members being targetted using state institution,ruling out a credible and the country is set to be part of the agenda.
Zambnian politician Joseph Kalimbwe hailed the chairmanship which he said will go a long way in addressing critical political issues bedevilling the SADC region.
“Our country is set to assume the SADC Troika Chairmanship. From Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province to the crying voices in Eswatini to the electoral reform campaigners in Zimbabwe; SADC region, in President Hichilema, you have a friend at the decision table. Welcome our leader !!,”he said.
The SADC region is in turmoil with some countries experiencing political violence.EArlier this year several supporters from the Citizen Coalition for Chnage were brutally attacked in Murehwa by suspected ZANU PF thugs,sparking fears of another dispued election.
In the neighbouring C abo Delgadfo Province in Mozambique,many people have been displaced multiple times, forcing them to abandon their few possessions, means of survival, loved ones and communities during each displacement.
Living through such a prolonged conflict, with little to no prospect of a stable future, comes with profound mental health consequences.
