Huawei has pledged to connect about 120 million people in remote areas in 80 countries by 2025, Huawei Vice President of Corporate Communications Vicky Zhang has said.

Speaking during Int’l Telecommunication Union (ITU) Partner2Connect first Annual Meeting that was held on the 8th of December at ITU’s Headquarters in Geneva, Zhang vowed that Huawei is committed to bridge the digital divide in remote communities by 2025.

“Huawei is committed to bridging the digital divide in remote communities. By the end of 2025, Huawei ICT solutions (including RuralStar) will bring connectivity to about 120 million people in remote areas across more than 80 countries.”

Zhang added that with the help of her government they are going to provide training opportunities for ICT professionals.

“In Cambodia, the ITU’s first P2C Partner Country, Huawei will work with government departments through the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and universities to provide 10, 000 training opportunities for ICT professionals over the next five years (2022-2027).

In 2021 ITU launched the Partner 2Connect Digital Coalition (P2C)a multi-stakeholder alliance to mobilize and announce new resources, partnerships and commitments to achieve universal and meaningful connectivity.

ITU launched the P2C after recognising the pressing need of the UN Secretary General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, and the important foundation for outlining the Global Digital Compacts principles of an open free and secure digital future for all.

In a year P2C made a very important milestone including over 500 pledges and the mobilization of over US$28 billion for connectivity projects around the world.

The first P2C Annual Meeting gave the attendees an opportunity to learn about the progress on the implementation of pledges made through the Coalition, celebrate the announcement of new pledges and commitments, discuss the challenges and opportunities for connecting the unconnected at specific breakout sessions, as well as network and share experiences, which will further advance global digital transformation.
