The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) increased load shedding has affected the operational efficiency of the Postal and Telecommunication Sector, Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has said.

In its latest 3rd Quarter sector report, POTRAZ highlighted that operational efficiency has a strong effect on the overall quality service of the Postal and Telecommunication hence the current increased load-shedding posed a serious challenge.

“The increased load-shedding has posed a serious challenge to operational efficiency, impacting overall quality of service and raising the cost of service provision,” said POTRAZ.

ZETDC earlier this year announced that there will be an increased load shedding countrywide due to electricity demand in winter and power imports constraints.

Recently the load curtailment national wide worsened. amid reports that the Kariba South Power Station was ordered to shut down because the water levels at Kariba Dam are very low for power generation.

The country has been having power cuts in the past two years amid reports that the country’s main power generators, Hwange Thermal and Kariba Hydro Power Stations have not been producing to their maximum capacity due to faults.

Zimbabwe’s power demands is 2100 Mega Watts (MW) but currently the country is only generating 501MW from Kariba South Power Station (200MW) and Hwange Power Station (301MW).

Power imports  from neighbouring Mozambique and South Africa have gone down due to debts and the incapacity of suppliers such as ESKOM to generate enough power for their own use.

The increased load-shedding has also affected many businesses country wide.
