Treasury has set aside 31 billion for the upgrading of the Robert Mugabe international airport ,Techmagtv has learnt.
The airport had been operating without a radar systems and the minister of finance and economic development allocated the funds for the upgrade during his 2023 budget presentation on Thursday
“Support will mainly focus on the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, funded from a loan from China Exim Bank. Completion of the project will increase passengers and cargo handling capacity at the airport, ensuring it becomes one of the regional aviation hubs, attracting more airlines and facilitating tourist arrivals
“The Budget will provide ZW$3.1 billion for the procurement and installation of air traffic control, surveillance, aircraft communication and weather equipment in order to improve air safety and security,’’he said
The funds were sourced from an Export-Import Bank of China loan of $153 million granted to Zimbabwe to upgrade the airport, including the radar system
Zimbabwe has already contracted the China Harbour Equipment Company to upgrade the radar at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare.
Air traffic controllers at the airport have been assisting planes to safely land without a radar system and planes were reported to be landing landing undetected.

Last month the government took delivery of equipment as part of a US$153 million and installation is set to commence soon.
