Telecoms regulator, Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) in collaboration with he Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ), Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has conducted another consumer and community engagement in Mt Selinda to raise awareness on consumer rights and responsibilities.

Speaking on behalf of POTRAZ Director General, Dr Gift Machengete, Head Industry and Consumer Affairs, Dr Vengesai Magadzire said such engagements are a stepping stone towards attaining an upper middle – income economy by 2030.

“ICTs have been identified as a key catalyst in attaining vision 2030, as they are pivotal in enabling socio – economic development. This therefore calls for concerted efforts and collaboration in a bid to create an enabling environment for the generality of Zimbabweans whom we serve. That enabling environment can only be created if the consumer is protected,”

He added, “With the increased adoption of digital services, almost all services are now accessed using communication gadgets. Our phones have become our banks, and we use them to buy different goods and services. The question that arises is, when one has challenges when purchasing goods and services using mobile phones, where does he go to report? Is it the CCZ, the RBZ or POTRAZ? As regulators we found it good to have standing Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) to allow for a collaborative approach to consumer protection.”

Some of the topics discussed during engagement include consumer rights and responsibilities, mobile financial services
unpacking of the Consumer protection Act and cyber security issues.

Stakeholders believe that such initiatives will protect consumers against cyber criminals.
