Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) lawmaker Job Sikhala’s wife Ellen has pleaded not guilty to the charges of violating traffic regulations.
The accused states that on the day of her arrest, she did not go against traffic there were two stationary vehicles and she turned into the next lane to avoid the vehicles.
She added that the Police officer demanded for bribe and the charges came after she refused to bribe the officer.
However, State witness Kelvin Mugadza highlighted that he did not ask for bribe but Ellen offered to pay fine to the police.
“She is lying after we arrested her she asked for assistance because she was in a hurry to see her husband and asked to pay a fine,” the court heard.
Magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure postponed the matter to October 28.
Human rights lawyer Paidamoyo Saurombe, who is representing the accused in an interview said they are waiting for the State second witness to be lead and they will take the matter from there.
“The first State witness was lead today, we will have the second witness lead on the 28th of October and that will be the close of the State case and we will take it from there.
According to court papers Ellen is said to have driven against the flow of traffic while going to visit her husband at Chikurubi prison on September 20.
She was arrested by police who also impounded the vehicle.
Ellen’s arrest drew condemnation from opposition CCC activists who accused the authorities of harassing Sikhala’s family.
