Norton Member of Parliament Temba Mliswa has described Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa as biased towards the ruling party after he criticised her written statement on the assault of journalists by Citizens Coalition for Change security.

This comes after Minister Monica Mutsvangwa issued a statement condemning security personnel who assaulted Ruvimbo Muchenje at a rally in Chinhoyi over the weekend .

“The ministry condemns the barbaric and outrageous assault of journalists at a rally in Chinhoyi over the weekend . The journalist , Ruvimbo Muchenje and Nunurai Jena were humiliated , harassed and prevented from executing their duties by party security officers as they tried to gain entry into Gadzema stadium to cover the rally on 11 September 2022,” read part of the statement.

Commenting on the statement Mliswa said “Effective leadership is when the standard and principles are applied equally and fairly across the board. When we speak out only when the situation favours us then we are part of the problem”, says Mliswa

He further echoed that the effectiveness and sense of the statement was limited and damaged by the absence of the same when ZANUPF Official supporters assaulted journalists covering a CCC event recently.

“We can’t end the scourge of violence fighting it with such insincerity,”

Recently four journalists were attacked and injured by suspected Zanu-PF supporters as they filmed a ruling party convoy that was speeding in pursuit of opposition leader Nelson Chamisa’s motorcade.

Impunity for crimes against journalists remains high in Zimbabwe.

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti, who is also the CCC vice president, accused President Mnangagwa of encouraging impunity.

“The escalating levels of violence across the length and breadth of Zimbabwe are simply not acceptable,” Mr Biti said.

“(President) Mnangagwa has the power, the duty and obligation to uphold the constitution and stop the orgy of lawlessness.

“The attack on our members, journalists doing their job, and on innocent by-standers are all crimes against humanity.
