Former Foreign Affairs Minister Walter Mzembi is set to appear in court tomorrow after he was remanded in custody ago on June 30.
Magistrate Donald Ndirowei is expected to deliver a ruling regarding Mzembi’s application for the cancellation of outstanding arrest warrants.
Mzembi was apprehended approximately two weeks ago by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) shortly after his return from Zambia, following a private meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House.
He stands accused of defaulting on court appearances and failing to comply with three outstanding warrants of arrest issued against him.
During previous proceedings, Mzembi’s lawyer, Mr. Killian Mandiki, presented detailed written submissions, asserting that his client’s extended absence was not deliberate but a consequence of a severe battle with advanced rectal cancer.
Mandiki outlined Mzembi’s medical journey, which included being granted temporary passport release in 2018 for emergency treatment and surgery in South Africa.
He further explained that Mzembi relocated to Zambia in early 2024 due to travel documentation issues that prevented him from continuing his treatment in South Africa. Mandiki stated that Mzembi’s condition deteriorated upon arrival in Zambia, leading to immediate hospitalization and intensive care. Medical records substantiating these claims were submitted as evidence to the court.
