The President of the Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD), Linda Tsungirirai Masarira, delivered a scathing State of the Nation Address yesterday, painting a branding Zimbabwe’s healthcare system a national disgrace.
Her address outlined the suffering, lack of essential resources, and what she described as a crisis demanding urgent reform.
Speaking as a citizen whose heart bleeds at the suffering of the people, Masarira detailed firsthand observations from government institutions, citing the despair of civil servants earning a pittance that mocks their humanity.
This, she argued, extends directly to the public health sector, where facilities are reportedly failing to provide even basic care.
“Hospitals and local clinics have become places where hope goes to die, no medicines, no beds, no proper infrastructure.” Masarira asserted.
“Cancer patients are sent home to die, pregnant mothers are told to bring gloves, razor blades, and candles to give birth.” She added.
Masarira has demanded immediate and comprehensive healthcare reform, advocating for free basic healthcare as non-negotiable and calling for chronic illness and cancer treatment to be fully subsidized.
She also emphasized the need to prioritize mental health and ensure full access to care for people with disabilities, moving beyond charity.
