A devastating road accident near the Sebakwe River has left at least thirteen people feared dead in what authorities are calling one of the most horrific crashes in the area in recent months.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. and involved a fuel tanker, a small lorry, and a Nissan AD van that was reportedly operating as an unlicensed taxi, commonly referred to as a mushika-shika.

Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted that the fuel tanker initially sideswiped the lorry, which escaped with minimal damage. The lorry driver sustained only minor injuries. However, tragedy unfolded moments later when the tanker, unable to negotiate a sharp curve, veered off its path and slammed into the Nissan AD van heading towards Indarama from Kwekwe.

The impact was catastrophic. The tanker overturned and landed directly on top of the van, crushing it entirely. The van was reportedly carrying several passengers at the time. Witnesses described the scene as “gut-wrenching,” with the vehicle completely flattened and barely visible beneath the overturned tanker.

While fuel leakage from the tanker raised serious concerns of a potential explosion, emergency responders confirmed that no fire had broken out.

Rescue operations continued into the afternoon as authorities worked to retrieve the bodies and clear the wreckage. Though the exact number of casualties is still to be verified, initial reports suggest that up to thirteen people may have lost their lives.

The identities of the victims are being withheld until proper identification procedures are complete and next of kin have been notified. Officials have urged the public to allow emergency teams the space to conduct their work safely and respectfully.
