The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and the country’s courts are escalating their efforts to combat reckless driving, sending a strong message to errant motorists in both central business districts and residential areas.
This intensified stance follows the recent arrest and conviction of two drivers in Harare for separate incidents of dangerous driving.
Alexander Tapiwa Kaseke (34) was sentenced to 36 months imprisonment on April 29, 2025, after being convicted of contravening Section 52 (2) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 13:11, which pertains to reckless driving. Kaseke’s dangerous actions at the intersection of R G Mugabe Road and Angwa Street resulted in him driving over a pavement, colliding with a traffic light pole, and hitting another vehicle traveling on Angwa Street.
In addition to the jail term, Kaseke’s driver’s license was canceled, and he is prohibited from driving any vehicle for the next 24 months.
In a separate incident on May 2, 2025, Tichaona Dzvuvira (29) was apprehended after he was observed driving a public service vehicle carrying passengers along a pavement from Fidel Castro Road into Bank Street.
Police reported that Dzvuvira exhibited blatant reckless driving behavior, completely disregarding the safety of his passengers.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, authorities discovered a litany of violations, including an expired vehicle license and insurance, missing registration plates, seven missing wheel nuts, a non-functional rear windscreen wiper, no rear-view mirror, and hazardous fittings that posed a threat to other road users.
Dzvuvira’s case is currently pending finalization in the courts.
In a statement, the ZRP has revealed that they will be using drones among other gadgets to ensure that drivers adhere to the regulations.
“With the advent of technology in policing which includes drone usage and other gadgets, the day of reckless driving by motorists are coming to an end.
“Drivers of both Public Service Vehicles and private vehicles are once again reminded to be law abiding citizens and collectively contribute towards road safety for all.” Reads the statement.
