Zimbabwe has been chosen to host the 2025 edition of the Regional Annual Sports Awards (RASA), a prestigious event that recognizes outstanding achievements in sports across Southern Africa. The event will take place on May 24 at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) and will be presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the guest of honor.
Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Hon. Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Ambassador A.N. Sanyatwe, expressed delight over the development, highlighting that hosting RASA 2025 aligns with the country’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) goals. “By hosting this event, Zimbabwe will not only be showcasing its hospitality, talent, and cultural vibrancy but also contributing significantly to realizing its national development objectives,” he said.
The Regional Annual Sports Awards were established in 2016 to recognize exceptional achievements by athletes, coaches, administrators, journalists, and volunteers across the 10 Member States of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5. These countries include Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The awards ceremony will feature various categories, including Junior Female Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Male Sportsperson of the Year, and Sports Woman of the Year with Disability, among others. These categories reflect the diversity and depth of talent in the region.
Minister Sanyatwe emphasized that hosting RASA 2025 offers Zimbabwe an opportunity to honor sporting talents in Southern Africa and demonstrate its readiness to host events of regional and international significance. “RASA is a celebration of the values that sport represents: unity, excellence, perseverance, and hope,” he added.
The event is a testament to Zimbabwe’s commitment to sports development, youth empowerment, and regional integration. With President Mnangagwa as the guest of honor, the country is set to showcase its capabilities in hosting high-profile events, while also promoting the values of sportsmanship and excellence.
