A devastating fire at the Zesa Holdings Southerton substation on Sunday night has destroyed critical equipment, leaving several areas without electricity. This incident comes on the heels of a technical fault at Hwange Power Station, which has resulted in reduced power supplies and increased load-shedding across the country.
According to Zesa Holdings, the fire at the Southerton substation has affected several substations, including Willowvale, Beatrice, Workington, and Glen Norah. Consequently, areas experiencing power outages include parts of Southerton, Workington Industrial, Old and New Ardbennie, parts of Willowvale, Rugare, Westwood, Lochnivar, Highfield, parts of Waterfalls, parts of Mbare, ZESA Enterprises, and ZRP Southerton.
“ZESA Holdings would like to advise its valued stakeholders of a technical fault that occurred at Hwange Power Station, resulting in the reduction of available power supplies,” the power utility said in a statement. “This unforeseen incident has necessitated increased load-shedding across all customer groups. Our technical team is working to rectify the problem and restore normal operations within the shortest possible time. The inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted.”
Regarding the Southerton substation incident, Zesa Holdings stated, “The fire resulted in damage to critical equipment at the substation… Our teams are working tirelessly to replace the damaged equipment and restore power supplies.”
To minimize the impact, temporary measures have been implemented, including supplying power to the Workington area from the Kambuzuma substation and to the Willowvale area from the Parkridge substation.

The inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted.” Zesa Holdings is working to restore power supplies and resolve the technical fault at Hwange Power Station as soon as possible.
