As the world commemorates Press Freedom Day, the Community Newspapers Association of Zimbabwe (CNAZ) has issued a press statement denouncing what it perceives as unwarranted government interference in journalistic duties and demanding the immediate release of senior journalist, Blessed Mhlanga.
In the statement, CNAZ asserts that journalism is not a crime, echoing the sentiment that the detention of Mhlanga is a violation of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which upholds the sanctity of international conventions on press freedom and the rights of journalists.
The association highlighted that Mhlanga was apprehended by law enforcement while diligently carrying out his professional responsibilities.
CNAZ refutes any suggestion that Mhlanga committed any offense, stating they are convinced that the journalist was simply fulfilling his duty to inform the public.

CNAZ has declared its unwavering solidarity with Mhlanga during this challenging period, calling upon a broad spectrum of stakeholders to intervene, including the judiciary, to ensure a fair and just legal process for Mhlanga.

CNAZ demands the release of Blessed Mhlanga
CNAZ firmly believes that the arrest of Mhlanga sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the critical role that journalism plays in a democratic society. emphasizing that a free press is an essential pillar for the enjoyment of all other rights within the country.
