Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and the first Latin American to hold the position, has died today, Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

 He was 88 years old.

The Vatican has confirmed his death in a statement released on X, formerly Twitter.

“Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.” Reads the statement.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Francis ascended to the papacy on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

His tenure was marked by a focus on social justice, advocacy for migrants and refugees, and vocal concerns about climate change.

Throughout his life, Pope Francis faced several health challenges, including the removal of part of his right lung in his youth.

In recent years, he experienced respiratory infections, including a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection and pneumonia, which required hospitalization.

His death comes just a day after he appeared in St. Peter’s Square to deliver an Easter blessing to thousands of worshippers.

The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will be buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, a departure from the traditional burial site within the Vatican.
