Zimbabweans are questioning the abrupt decision by the Parliament to adjourn its sitting until May 6, 2025, after the House met briefly on Tuesday, April 8. Initially, the session was expected to continue later that same day, but in an unexpected turn of events, the motion to adjourn was introduced by Zanu PF chief whip and Gutu South MP, Pupurai Togarepi, and seconded by CCC deputy chief whip, Bridget Dairai Nyandoro.
The National Assembly and Senate later confirmed the adjournment through a statement on X (formerly Twitter), which read: “The National Assembly and Senate adjourned to the 6th of May 2025.” However, no official explanation was provided for the sudden break, sparking a wave of speculation among Zimbabweans.
Many commentators took to social media to voice their concerns, with several suggesting political motivations behind the move, particularly in light of recent discussions surrounding possible impeachment proceedings. Some questioned if the adjournment was a strategic move to delay or block these proceedings.
One user, bluntly asked, “Is this a ploy to delay impeachment proceedings?” while @muntususu063328 seemed to echo a similar sentiment, writing, “Kutya impeachment. Haa, everything is captured in Zimbabwe shuwa. What rubbish is this?” Others, suggested that the break was a political strategy, stating, “We are in power to consolidate it, not to lose it. ‘2030 vaMnangagwa vanenge vachipo.’
Before the adjournment, Deputy Speaker Tsitsi Geza had briefly addressed the House, urging female MPs to attend a significant upcoming event. “I have to inform the House that the Zimbabwe Women Parliamentary Caucus will hold its inaugural meeting with the Ambassador of the Zimbabwe Women Parliamentary Caucus and Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic of Zimbabwe on Wednesday, 16th April 2025. All female parliamentarians are expected to attend this important meeting. Further details will be provided in due course,” she said.
While the meeting for female MPs is scheduled to take place mid-month, the decision to adjourn Parliament for nearly a month has ignited concerns over what lies behind the timing, with many Zimbabweans speculating that it could be linked to the politically charged issue of impeachment.
