Seven individuals were arrested on Tuesday after they were caught transporting four tonnes of smuggled meat, believed to have been illegally brought into the country from South Africa.

The  interception which was a tip-off from an anonymous whistleblower took place along the Harare-Masvingo highway near Mahusekwa turn-off. Officers from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) acted swiftly on the information, tracking down the suspects and ambushing a truck carrying the illicit cargo.

The truck was carrying chicken cuts, which were found to have been smuggled across the border. Once seized, the meat was taken to the Marondera police station for inspection, where it was confirmed to have been illegally imported from South Africa.

Lovemore Findi, ZACC’s Manager of Investigations, praised the success of the operation, noting, “We received a tip-off from a whistleblower, and acting on this lead, we were able to ambush the truck, seize the meat, and arrest the suspects involved.”

The seven suspects were charged with smuggling and appeared before the Marondera Magistrate’s Court. They were granted bail at US$50 each.

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to curb smuggling activities and protect local industries from illicit trade practices.
