Israel’s military has intensified its ground assault on Gaza, aiming to capture extensive territory that will be incorporated into new “buffer zones” in the Strip, Defense Minister Israel Katz announced. The move comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis and a rising death toll in the ongoing conflict.
21 Palestinians have been killed since dawn as Israel continues its relentless bombardment of Gaza. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 50,399 Palestinians have been confirmed dead, with 114,583 wounded. The Government Media Office estimates the death toll at over 61,700, citing thousands of bodies still trapped under the rubble. Since Israel resumed its attacks following the collapse of a truce, at least 1,042 Palestinians have been killed.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. All bakeries in the enclave, including 25 operated by the World Food Programme, have ceased operations due to Israel’s blockade, which has now entered its 31st day, the longest siege since the war began. The lack of food and essential supplies is exacerbating an already dire crisis for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.

Israel’s intensified military action follows the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,139 people in Israel and the capture of more than 200 hostages. The Israeli government has vowed to dismantle Hamas’ military infrastructure and prevent future threats, while international calls for de-escalation and humanitarian aid access continue to grow.
As the conflict rages on, the international community remains divided over potential solutions, with ongoing diplomatic efforts failing to secure a lasting ceasefire.
