Zimbabwe is embarking on an ambitious journey to revolutionize its agricultural sector by championing sunflower cultivation. This strategic move is poised to transform the country’s economy, making it more resilient and self-sustaining.
Speaking at a Pfumvudza/Intwasa Field Day in Umguza,Matebeleland North, Permanent Secretary, Professor Dr. Obert Jiri, articulated the government’s unwavering commitment to transforming agriculture by championing sunflower cultivation.
“Government fully committed to revolutionizing agriculture through sunflower cultivation”
The country spends over USD 240 million annually importing crude oil, which is largely derived from processed sunflower seeds. By promoting local cultivation and processing, the government aims to drastically reduce this import bill while stimulating domestic industry.
The benefits of sunflower cultivation extend beyond economic prudence. This initiative has the potential to ignite rural development, uplift livelihoods, and foster a future where communities thrive through self-reliance and innovation.
“By empowering farmers to achieve self-sufficiency in oilseed production, the government is creating a catalyst for grassroots transformation,”he added.
“Sunflower production is a lucrative venture, with the average market price standing at US$370 per tonne,”he said
The crop has several uses, including the manufacturing of edible oil, livestock feed, and confectionery products. With Zimbabwe’s ideal climatic conditions for sunflower production, the country is well-positioned to become a major player in the global sunflower market.
To achieve this vision, the government is mobilizing resources to support sunflower farmers. The Agricultural Marketing Authority has raised $100 million to provide affordable financing to farmers engaged in sunflower production. Additionally, seed companies are providing high-yielding varieties with a high oil percentage to support local farmers.
As Zimbabwe ramps up its sunflower cultivation efforts, the country is poised to reap numerous benefits. From strengthening national food security to stimulating domestic industry, this initiative has the potential to transform the country’s economy and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
