The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an urgent call for increased funding and immediate action to prevent a catastrophic collapse of tuberculosis (TB) services worldwide, warning that millions of lives are at risk.
In a press release issued ahead of World Tuberculosis Day on March 24th, the WHO highlighted severe disruptions caused by drastic cuts to global health funding, worsened by rising drug resistance and ongoing conflicts.
Despite significant progress in combating TB, which has saved an estimated 79 million lives since 2000, the WHO reports that funding shortfalls are now reversing these gains.
According to early reports, 27 countries, particularly in Africa, South-East Asia, and the Western Pacific, are experiencing critical breakdowns in their TB responses.
“The huge gains the world has made against TB over the past 20 years are now at risk as cuts to funding start to disrupt access to services for prevention, screening, and treatment for people with TB,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
