Zimbabwe is taking a bold step in developing a highly skilled workforce as 32 students from Harare Polytechnic’s Mechatronics Class of 2024 prepare for a year long training program in China. The initiative is part of the country’s push to enhance skills development in advanced technology and industrialization.
The program, established under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed in October 2022, will equip students with hands-on experience in mechatronics, a key field in modern manufacturing and automation. Participants will undergo both theoretical and practical training, earning dual certification from Harare Polytechnic and their Chinese counterparts.
Speaking at the send-off ceremony, Deputy Minister of Higher Education emphasized that the initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which focuses on industrialization and innovation. “This program is not just about education; it is about empowering young Zimbabweans with world-class skills that will drive economic transformation,” a ministry representative said.

Parents and guardians expressed pride and optimism for the students’ future. “You are the shining stars who will make Zimbabwe proud. Go and learn, work hard, and bring back the knowledge to help build our country,” said Mr. Mangena, a parent.
Students also shared their excitement. “I’m grateful for this opportunity to train in China. It’s a chance to gain valuable skills that will shape my future. To those who weren’t selected, I encourage you not to give up, keep working hard because more opportunities will come,” said Vanessa, one of the selected students.
The program underscores the strong educational partnership between Zimbabwe and China, reinforcing long-standing cooperation in skills development. As these students prepare for their journey, they represent a new generation of professionals set to contribute to Zimbabwe’s modernization and economic growth.
