Gwanda woman, Debra Nyathi (42) of Magedleni Village has been sentenced to 210 hours of community service after being convicted of unlawful possession of 599 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, a controlled substance often abused for its psychoactive effects.
The Gwanda Magistrates Court handed down the sentence following Nyathi’s arrest on February 12th.
She was intercepted by the National Anti-Smuggling team during a routine search of a bus travelling from South Africa along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo road.

According to court documents, the team discovered two sacks containing the cough syrup bottles during the search. Nyathi admitted ownership of the contraband and was immediately taken into custody.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the recovered drugs were sent for expert analysis at Gwanda Hospital, where a Pharmacist Affidavit confirmed the contents.

“Nyathi was sentenced to 12 months in prison, with 6 months suspended on condition of completing 210 hours of community service at Magahleni Primary School.” Reads the statement.
The seized Broncleer cough syrup was forfeited to the state for destruction.
